Even the best-informed political observers are scratching their heads trying to figure out what exactly Prime Minister Donald Tusk hopes to achieve by having Roman Giertych, the former leader of a nationalist party, represent his son in court against media outlets that have implicitly linked the younger Tusk to the Amber Gold scandal.

Michał Tusk used to work for OLT-Airlines, which was controlled by the infamous Amber Gold, now suspected to have been a financial pyramid that cheated thousands of Poles out of millions of złoty. As a result, some media have gleefully reported on the connection time and again, in what could indeed be interpreted as a way of dragging the Tusk name into the mud so as to weaken the prime minister himself.

Sue, sue

And so the family has decided Michał Tusk should sue those media outlets for slander. That in itself is not earth-shattering but the choice of Roman Giertych as lawyer, a man who, granted, has not been an active politician for 5 years now, but stills remains a very controversial figure in Poland, has dumbfounded political observers.

Mr Giertych, the former leader of the League of Polish Families, which was a nationalist, right-wing populist party, was a controversial politician and a hard-hitting political enemy of Mr Tusk and his Civic Platform (PO) party.

He was also one of the most unpopular ministers in the Law and Justice-led coalition which ruled Poland from 2005 to 2007, since he attempted to use his Ministry of Education as a propaganda tool to promote his nationalist ideas.

Donald Tusk must have known that choosing Roman Giertych would raise a storm, so why did he do it? Some say he chose Mr Giertych precisely because he knew the choice would spark controversy and so people would stop talking about his son's connection to Amber Gold, but instead focus on his lawyer.

That, however, seems a far-fetched theory. Others say Mr Tusk is paving the way for Mr Giertych to return to politics, as a member of his PO party.

That also seems an unlikely scenario as Roman Giertych is hugely unpopular with PO's centrist electorate. But then again, the former education minister says he has “matured” and no longer holds radical views, so who knows? Donald Tusk could have chosen just about any lawyer in Poland to represent his son so picking such a controversial figure could not have been coincidence.

I must admit I am completely perplexed myself and will have to wait to see how events pan out before being able to unravel this puzzle.
