Italy’s Alenia Aermacchi will provide a new training system for pilots as well as eight brand new M-346 Master jets which will be used to teach new military pilots.
The Ministry of Defense chose the Italian company over pan-European BAE Systems and British Lockheed Martin. Alenia Aermacchi posted the lowest price in the tender – PLN 1.168 billion, while BAE Systems offer was priced at PLN 1.754 billion and Lockheed Martin’s was worth PLN 1.803 billion
The new system and the planes will allow Polish army to prepare its pilots for flying the F-16 and MIG-29 planes after their training is complete.
The currently-used training planes TS-11 Iskra, which have been in use for some 50 years now, are too outdated to be used in this capacity, so the pilots are sent to the US so they can be trained to fly the F-16.
The system, and the M-346 Master jets are scheduled to be delivered by 2016-2017.
