Sejm Speaker Ewa Kopacz was elected first deputy chairperson of the ruling Civic Platform party on Saturday. She replaced Grzegorz Schetyna at the position. The candidacy of Ms Kopacz was proposed by Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
Mr Schetyna was once seen as one of the most important figures in Civic Platform, and a possible rival to Mr Tusk. In the party’s regional elections earlier this year, he lost his position as Lower Silesia party chairman to Jacek Protasiewicz.
Warsaw Mayor Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz, Senate Speaker Bogdan Borusewicz, Deputy Sejm Speaker Cezary Grabarczyk and Foreign Affairs Minister Radosław Sikorski were also elected deputy chairpersons. Government spokesperson Paweł Graś became the party’s secretary general.
Mr Schetyna received 147 votes, while Ms Kopacz garnered 249 votes.
