Just 13.8 percent of Poles are 65 or older, making Poland one of the youngest populations in Europe, according to the Central Statistical Office (GUS).

In Germany, 20.6 percent of the population is above 65, in Italy the percentage is 20.3 and in Greece it is 19.1 percent. £ódzkie is the voivodship that has the oldest population, with 15.5 percent above 65, while in Warmińsko-Mazurskie the figure is only 12.0 percent, the lowest in Poland.

However, according to a forecast published by GUS, Poland's birth rate will continue to decline and in 2035, those over 65 will account for 23 percent of the population.
