Poland’s Finance Minister Jacek Rostowski was awarded the title of “Finance Minister of the Year 2012 for Emerging Europe” by Emerging Markets, an online source of economic news, analysis and commentary.
The award ceremony was held on Saturday during the IMF/World Bank annual meeting in Tokyo. The best finance ministers and heads of central banks of emerging markets were chosen by economists, analysts, bankers and investors from both the public sphere and the private sector.
David Hauner, head of EEMEA economics and fixed income strategy at BofA Merrill Lynch, said Mr Rostowski had provided a model for how his western European neighbours should have acted since the sovereign debt crisis hit the euro zone.
Poland's economy has grown in every year since the economic crisis started in 2008.
Mr Hauner said that Mr Rostowski also deserved credit for the way in which he had reduced the deficit. “He did it consistently and in a way that coordinated discretionary measures and through growth to bring down the deficit over time,” Mr Hauner said.
This is the second time Mr Rostowski has been awarded the prestigious title. In 2009 he was also named the “Finance Minister of the Year for Emerging Europe.”
