On average, employees in Poland earn the most in Warsaw, Wrocław and Poznań, and the lowest in Białystok, Lublin and Opole, according to a recent survey of salaries carried out by consultancy firm Sedlak & Sedlak.
The average wage in Warsaw is zł.5,500, zł.4,300 in Wrocław and zł.4,200 in Poznań. Gdańsk comes in fourth with an average wage of zł.4,100 while people earn zł.4,000 on average in Katowice and Kraków.
Meanwhile, out of the 16 cities surveyed, people in Białystok earned the least on average (zł.3,000). Next to the bottom is Lublin, where people earn zł.3,020, and then Opole, where people earn zł.3,250. Rzeszów, Olsztyn and Kielce don't fare much better, with the average salary standing at zł.3,300 in all three cities.
The ranking reflects Poland's east-west divide, whereby people living in eastern, less-developed parts of the country generally earn much less than those living in western regions. One of the main exceptions to this rule is Warsaw, which has the highest average wage despite being located to the east of the country.
Most of the foreign investment in Poland is made in Warsaw and the western parts of the country. Poland's east has struggled to attract capital.
