Extreme cold: death toll rises to 61 in Poland
As of February 5, 61 people had died of hypothermia in Poland since temperatures dropped well below zero on January 27, according to statistics from the Polish Police.
Many of the victims were homeless people, and last Friday Prime Minister Donald Tusk asked local authorities to waive the ban on admitting inebriated people to homeless shelters.
Local authorities have lit braziers in public places, while the Interior Ministry asked people to contact the emergency services if they saw others stuck in life-threatening situations. Emergency services can be reached at 112 or 997.
