There is a strong likelihood that a segment of the A1 highway, linking Poland with the Czech Republic, will not be finished before the start of the Euro 2012 soccer championships. This is because a bridge in the section in question is cracking, reported Dziennik Gazeta Prawna.
Nonetheless, according to Poland's roads authority and investor, GDDKiA, the structure remains safe.
Austrian consortium Alpine, which won the contract to build the 20-km segment, noticed cracks in a critical segment of the bridge and had brought the problem to the attention of GDDKiA three years ago.
But according to the government body, only one out of 132 fixtures was damaged and has since been fixed.
Experts have sided with Alpine, and claim that the bridge may have to be rebuilt if it doesn't pass further tests, Dziennik Gazeta Prawna wrote.
