The official opening of Poland's new National Stadium, scheduled for Sunday January 29, could be postponed after the facility's operators were refused a safety permit by Warsaw City Hall.
Sunday's concert featuring Polish group T Love and singer Lady Pank was due to be the first public event since the stadium was completed back in December. But on Monday Ewa Gawor, a spokesperson for Warsaw City Hall, said that “due to the two negative reviews from the fire and sanitary inspectors, the decision was taken not to conduct this event.”
In order for the event to now go ahead, the city's authorities will need to receive positive recommendations from both the fire department and the district building inspector by Friday.
However Poland's Minister of Sport Joanna Mucha stressed that the concert is still set to be held and that only a few minor formalities need to completed. “I bet that the opening event will take place. If not, then I can run around the stadium, around the Palace of Culture or anything else,” she told reporters at a press conference.
The National Stadium, located in Warsaw's Praga district, is due to host its first soccer match on February 11 when Legia Warsaw will take on Wisła Kraków in the Polish Supercup Final. The opening match of Euro 2012 will also take place at the stadium, when Poland hosts Greece on June 8.
