Poland's Ministry of Health has acknowledged that funds from the 20th Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity (WOŠP) may be used to provide insulin pumps to the country's hospitals.
Previously, Polish daily Rzeczpospolita had reported that hospitals could not accept donations of medical supplies under the country's new and controversial health care reforms. It was reported that donations of equipment used with medicines that fall under the category of refundable drugs could not be accepted by hospitals.
Insulin is refundable through state-provided medical insurance and it was therefore feared that WÓSP would be prevented from utilizing the funds it collected to supply the insulin pumps to hospitals. The charity has raised over zł.40 million at this year's event.
However, the Ministry of Health stated in a press release that, “The WÓSP foundation is not a business which produces or which manages the sales of refundable medicinal products,” and therefore is allowed to supply the medical instruments as intended.
