Jarosław Kaczyński, the leader of Poland's main opposition party, Law and Justice (PiS), has got himself a new cat, according to Polish television station TVP.

The news comes just over a month after the PiS leader's former cat, Alik, died. Alik, who was often referred to as “the most famous cat in Poland” due to its association with Mr Kaczyński, passed away following a long battle with kidney problems.

The new cat, which is yet to be named, is currently residing in Mr Kaczyński's home in the Żoliborz district of Warsaw, after it was chosen from a shelter for abandoned cats.

“It's a cat from a shelter … just the most ordinary Polish street cat,” a source close to Mr Kaczyński said.
