English referee Howard Webb has been chosen as one of the 12 match officials for this summer's Euro 2012 soccer tournament, which is being co-hosted by Poland and Ukraine.
Mr Webb became a controversial figure in Poland following his contentious decision to award Austria a 93rd minute penalty during a match between that country and Poland at Euro 2008. Austria converted the spot kick and leveled the score at 1-1. Poland subsequently failed to make it to the quarter-finals stage.
Mr Webb, who is a former sergeant in the English police force, has since gone on to become one of the most respected referees in the world. He took charge at Inter Milan's victory in the 2010 Champions League final, and at the World Cup in South Africa in the same year, where he officiated the final in which Spain overcame the Netherlands by one goal to nil.
