A new section of the A2 highway which links Polish city Nowy Tomyśl to the German border opened on Wednesday night, extending the roadway to 360 km.

Now only 92 km remain to be built before Warsaw is linked to the roadway. The remaining section is reportedly expected to be ready for the Euro 2012 soccer championships.

The roadway will decrease travel times between Berlin and Poznań significantly.

The new section will be toll-free until May 21, 2012.

President Bronisław Komorowski, former Solidarity leader Lech Wałęsa and former President Aleksander Kwaśniewski took part in the opening ceremony.

“We all feel that we are closer to realizing Poland's dream of an easier connection with the entire Western world,” said Mr Komorowski.

The value of the entire investment is zł.1.6 billion.
