Jarosław Kaczyński, leader of the main opposition party Law and Justice (PiS), said today he will submit a petition to place Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski before the State Tribunal for comments he made on Monday in Berlin.
In his speech entitled “Poland and the Future of the European Union,” which he delivered at the German Society for Foreign Affairs, the Polish FM called for further centralization and federalization of the European Union. “If we do not want to risk partial dismantling of the EU, we will face the tough choice of greater integration or disintegration,” said Mr Sikorski.
In this proposed European federation, members’ national sovereignty would be limited while the powers and efficiency of existing European institutions would be enhanced, notably in matters of economic policy.
In the same speech, Mr Sikorski also made a much-discussed appeal to Germany to “save” the euro zone. “Nobody else can do it,” said the FM.
Mr Kaczyński said Mr Sikorski's comments offer Poland “a subjugative role and go against her independence.”
According to the opposition leader, Mr Sikorski's proposal of a European federation would mean that Poland's interests would always be treated as that of “a third or fourth-league country, a post-colonial country.”
The PiS leader also said his party would support a motion of no-confidence filed against the foreign minister by the parliamentary club Solidarna Polska.
