Warsaw Stock Exchange-listed construction company Budimex is predicting that the years ahead will be difficult for itself and for other contractors in Poland, reported Puls Biznesu.
Most worrisome for the company is a dramatic drop in the number of tenders for road construction contracts. These generally account for a significant portion of the company's profits.
In 2010, Poland's roads authority, the GDDKiA, issued contracts worth zł.11 billion to companies such as Budimex. So far in 2011, it has issued contracts worth just zł.3 billion.
Dariusz Blocher, the president of Budimex's management board, told Puls Biznesu that he is “not especially worried about profits for 2012, but 2013, and 2014 will most likely be troublesome for the company.”
Budimex had zł.50 billion in contracts in 2010; this year it has had zl.25-30 billion. The company, along with others in the industry, is looking to energy development, waste management and rail to make up for the lack of profits from road-building contracts.
