American e-commerce giant Amazon could enter the Polish market as early as March or April 2012, according to information received by Polish daily Dziennik Gazeta Prawna.
Amazon is currently in talks on cooperation with Polish partners, which include courier and postal services, led by the InPost and Poczta Polska, the newspaper reported.
When contacted by the newspaper Janusz Wojtas, a board member at Poczta Polska, refused to comment. However Rafal Brzoska, president of InPost, said, “We have not signed any agreement, but we expect that if the decisions are made, Amazon will conclude an agreement with several operators.”
The entry of the Seattle-based multinational could pose a threat to local book and media retailers including current market leaders Empik and Merlin.pl, but Jakub Frołow, a media expert and founder of the publishing agency BookSenso, told the newspaper that the two firms have a strong position and may survive. But Mr Frołow added that they may need to adopt aggressive pricing strategies in order to compete if Amazon were to enter the Polish market.
