Two months ahead of parliamentary elections, Zbigniew Chlebowski has resigned from Prime Minister Donald Tusk's Civic Platform (PO) party.
A central figure in a 2009 scandal over alleged corruption in the creation of a gambling bill, Mr Chlebowski suspended his party membership in October of that year, when the scandal broke.
Transcriptions of tapped phone conversations indicated Mr Chlebowski was meeting with gambling industry representatives and promising to block legislation unfavorable for the industry.
A parliamentary commission later ruled no illegal activity had taken place. Mr. Chlebowski is now expected to be campaigning as an independent candidate for a seat in the Senate in the October 9 elections, although he refused to confirm the rumors to the Polish Press Agency on Tuesday.
