President Bronisław Komorowski has officially announced October 9 as the date of this year's parliamentary elections, urging all eligible voters to head for the polls on that day.
Asked at a press conference whether he would campaign on behalf of the ruling Civic Platform party (PO), on whose platform he won the presidency, Mr Komorowski said he would not be actively campaigning.
An August poll by SMG/KRC suggests support for PO is at 38 percent while their main rivals Law and Justice (PiS) are backed by 28 percent of the electorate. The Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) has11 percent and the current junior coalition partner the Polish Peoples' Party (PSL) are backed by 6 percent of Poles.
In contrast the most recent CBOS poll had support for PO at 38 percent, PiS at a lowly 17 percent, SLD at 9 percent and PSL at 4 percent.
