EU bans 75-watt light bulb
As of tomorrow, the production and import of traditional 75-watt light bulbs will be prohibited in the European Union.
The light bulb will still be available for sale until stocks run out, which could take about three months, according to Jürgen Sturm, general secretary of the European Lamp Companies Federation ELCFED. That is how long it took for supplies to run out when the 100 watt bulb was banned a year ago.
At that time there was a boom as suppliers stocked up on 100 watt bulbs, but the situation has not repeated itself to the same extent this time. Prohibition on production and import of 60-watt bulbs is due to be introduced next year, with a ban on all traditional light bulbs coming into effect in 2012.
