The Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) has fined digital platform operator Canal+ Cyfrowy zł.3.6 million for not adequately informing its clients of changes in subscription-fee contracts and in regulations, said Małgorzata Cieloch, spokesperson for UOKiK, in a press communique.
Ms Cieloch said that UOKiK had initiated proceedings in the case after complaints from consumers in November of 2009.
UOKiK established that Canal+ Cyfrowy had informed its clients about the changes in the agreements, but only by placing the information towards the end of a magazine sent to subscribers.
“UOKiK found fault with the method and form by which the clients were informed. Consumers couldn’t have expected that vital information about such things as an increase in subscription fees would be placed in the last two pages of such a magazine,” the communique read.
Apart from the zł.3.6 million fine, UOKiK has ordered Canal+ to publish the details of the decision on its website, where it should remain for six months, and also to publish the decision in a national newspaper.
Canal+ now has the right to appeal the decision.
