Legendary Warsaw bazaar closes for good on Saturday

Europe's largest bazaar, the Jarmark Europa, will officially cease trading at midnight on Saturday, bringing to an end one of Warsaw's most iconic landmarks.

Located on the grounds of the decrepit 10th-Anniversary Stadium, Jarmark Europa was established in 1989 by Vietnamese immigrants looking to earn a living from street trading. The bazaar had a reputation for operating as part in the grey economy, with counterfeit CDs, DVDs and software numbering among the myriad of goods on offer. The bazaar was soon populated by sellers of a wide range of backgrounds, from Ukrainians to Africans to Georgians and Poles.

Trading is being terminated because a new National Stadium is under construction on the site of the 10th-Anniversary Stadium. The new stadium is being built in preparation for the Euro 2012 soccer championships, which Poland is co-hosting with Ukraine.

While Saturday will certainly mark the end of an era, the tenants of Jarmark Europa have been given alternative sites to which they can relocate. Most merchants will move either to buildings located on ul. Marywilska or in the market at ul. Bakalarska in the Włochy district.
