Classified intel on Wikileaks site "irresponsible," US gov says

Source: ISAF

Whistleblower website Wikileaks has published around 90,000 classified US military records concerning the war in Afghanistan. The cache of documents has been described as one of the biggest leaks in American history.

These documents, most of which are tersely worded incident reports, cover the 2004-2009 period. They describe various mission types, including “enemy actions” and “friendly fire.” Although there are few stunning revelations in the documents, commentators have noted that the number of unreported civilian deaths is higher than reported by the US government.

Another controversial disclosure is the claim that Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the ISI, has covertly supported the Taliban during the war. Pakistan has flatly denied this allegation.

The US government has condemned Wikileaks' posting of the information as “irresponsible,” describing it as a possible national security threat.

Several of the classified reports reveal incidents involving Polish troops. These include several events involving improvised explosive devices (IEDs), which are one of the biggest killers of coalition forces in Afghanistan.

For example, on August 20, 2008, an incident report titled “(EXPLOSIVE HAZARD) IED EXPLOSION RPT (CWIED) POL BG : 3 CF KIA 1 CF WIA 3 UE DET” details the explosion which killed Master Corporal Waldemar Sujdak, Lance Corporal Paweł Brodzikowski and Lance Corporal Paweł Szwed of the Second Mazowiecka Sapper Brigade.

The report reads: “3x possible INS detained, 1x M1151 damaged (non-mission capable). CIED Team Ghazni arrived on scene and conducted exploitation. TM determined the device to have been a CWIED consisting of 1x Landmine. Components were recovered by the PBG and FF returned to base. [Nothing further to report]. Event closed at 1645Z.” The names of the deceased are not included, but a satellite map of the incident's location is furnished.

Most of the reports involving Polish troops do not mention civilian casualties.
