Small gallery, big impact

It’s small, it’s stylish, it’s in Warsaw’s blooming, artsy Praga district and it’s been rumored as the Polish gallery most likely to succeed in obtaining foreign investment.

But despite all of this, the Klima Bochenska gallery still has a modest feel to it and hasn’t strayed from its original objective – to accurately reflect the creative activities of Poland’s artists, both new and established.

Dividing its exhibitions into “Art in General” (from established artists of an older generation) and “Art in Progress” (featuring radical, newly emergent avant-garde works) each display is carefully selected by gallery founder and owner Klementyna Bocheńska. Formerly an artist herself, she has worked for and been a curator of a number of main Warsaw gallery and museum spaces, including the National Museum.

Her gallery’s most recent photographic exhibition, “Just Watch: Young Polish Photography,” which exhibited the works of newly discovered Polish talent, exemplifies the careful consideration that goes into each display. In conversations with the six young artists for whom the gallery became a temporary home last month, the excitement and trepidation (for a couple of the photographers this was their first professional showing) made it clear that this gallery provides the important initial grounds for many a young artist.

Creative endeavors such as June’s “Just Watch,” have interesting messages – like how Polish youth react to the interests and personalities of their generation and how they view their own homes and locales – from Warsaw and £ód¼ to the coal-mining region of Lower Silesia.

Beginning July, the gallery is hosting a “Summer Show” of works by artists affiliated with the gallery.

In addition to photography, the gallery showcases both drawing and sculpture and seeks to experiment with new video projects. Currently in the process of finding partner institutions abroad, the Klima Bochenska gallery is well on its way to international renown.
