Police bill does not include expected surveillance powers

The Sejm is considering a bill revising police laws that still does not include proposals that were already discussed last fall.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration then drafted a proposal that the police should be able to carry out surveillance such as opening mail, checking SMS and e-mail messages and tapping phone lines, subject to court approval, in the case of certain crimes.

The crimes covered by the proposal included financial fraud, disclosing business secrets and insider trading.

The Ministry is still working on the new law after deciding that it is not an urgent matter, even though it was scheduled to be in force by now. At the moment, the police often has little but circumstantial evidence to work with in such white-collar criminal cases.
