“The Promised City”
Museum of Modern Art
In Warsaw April 23
June 20
“The Promised City” is a major cross-border, interdisciplinary project offering a broad portrait of the modern-day metropolises of Central Europe and Asia. The project kicked off in February at the Kunst-Werke Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin and will continue through the autumn in the form of various activities in Berlin, Warsaw and Bombay.
The ongoing event is the fruit of two years of work by curators, writers and artists, as well as the Goethe-Institut in Warsaw and the Polish Institute in Berlin. The main idea behind the experiment is to explore the nature of metropolitan existence around the world, particularly in cities where economic, social and cultural life is budding following long periods of hardship.
The Warsaw leg of “The Promised City” kicks off at 9 pm Friday, April 23, with a party at the Nowy Wspaniały Świat Cultural Centre, featuring a multimedia presentation prepared by curators from Berlin’s Club Transmediale. That same day, in its window-displays the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw will exhibit works prepared by the Kunst-Werke. This fashion of exhibiting art harkens back to the root meaning of the Polish word “wystawa” (or “exhibition”), which implies a showcase not unlike a storefront display.
Altogether “The Promised City” features a series of events that span many genres – including art, film, photography, music, theater and discussions – exploring the dynamics of urban life. There will be formal exhibitions, informal theatrical events and guided tours of the lesser known corners of Warsaw.
