Rostowski launches wide-ranging audit

Finance Minister Jacek Rostowski has given all departments of state 10 days to prove that every penny of their collective zł.301 billion budget expenditure is justified.

No previous government has carried out such a wide-ranging audit, and certainly not on such a tight schedule.

All departments have to fill out a rigorous survey detailing all spending and justifying increases. Any expenditures that increase without good reason may be crossed off from next year's budget.

The government is trying to find savings at every level of budget planning. Ministries often increase spending in line with inflation automatically, even when this is not justified.
