Poland's Council of Ministers could approve as early as today US President Barack Obama's proposal to deploy a missile defense shield in Poland. The US is still looking to build missile silos in northern Poland, but those are not likely to come online before 2018.

The US is also interested in building longer-range missile silos near the Poland-Kaliningrad border. These would be capable of shooting down missiles from as far as 5,500 kilometers away, presumably to combat a potential nuclear threat from Iran.

On Friday, Polish President Lech Kaczyński, signed an agreement on the future status of U.S. military personnel in Poland, clearing the path for the missiles to arrive. Poland announced Saturday it would receive the initial set of U.S. Patriot missiles next month.
