Beer sales in Poland drop to 2006 levels
The breweries' nightmare has come true: sales of beer in Poland have fallen back to levels last seen in 2006.
Brewery group Żywiec said yesterday that its beer sales by volume in 2009 fell more than 6 percent, leading to a drop of more than 2 percent in consolidated revenue and a 25 percent plunge in operating profit.
The company said that the total Polish beer market shrank last year by as much as 10.1 percent to 3.22 billion liters.
Nationwide annual beer consumption has dropped back to the 2006 average level of 85 liters per person. In 2008, the figure averaged 94 liters per person.
