A decision on Fiat Panda production in Poland could come any time now.
The Italian government will discuss the matter today, when it questions Fiat chief executive Sergio Marchionne about the automaker's European investments.
The production plant in Tychy, where the best-selling car is made, is waiting anxiously for news from Rome. The factory is a jewel in Fiat's crown, having produced almost 300,000 vehicles last year – a figure unmatched by an other Fiat plant. But that is probably not enough to keep Panda production there.
A few months ago, Mr Marchionne was already saying he was considering placing building the third generation version of the car at Pomigliano d'Arco, near Naples.
"This is a political decision," where economics plays no part, said Rafa³ Or³owski of AutomotiveSuppliers.pl.
Experts estimate that transferring production to Italy could cost €300-400 million.
