As many as 64% of Poles believe that Prime Minister Donald Tusk has made the right decision in backing out of this year's presidential elections, according to a survey by BfK Polonia. The opposing view is held by about 20%.
Dr Bartolomiej Biskup, a politics specialist at the Warsaw University, the prime minister has calculated his move well.
"He must have had some research and analysis that showed he was not 100% certain to win the presidency," Biskup said.
However, he added that the decision weakens the chances of a PO candidate winning the presidency.
"In the eyes of most Civic Platform officials and voters Tusk was the party's natural candidate for president," Biskup said. "Someone else might not stir up such enthusiasm."
In the survey, 41% believe the prime minister's decision weakens the PO's chances, while 49% think the opposite.
