The “Arbeit Macht Frei” sign that hung over the entrance to the Auschwitz concentration camp has been stolen.

The sign, which means “work sets you free,” was made by the prisoners themselves. Police are searching for the perpetrators.

The infamous death camp, situated in Oświęcim in southern Poland, is the most notorious of all the Nazi German death camps, as it saw over a million people – 90 percent of whom were Jews – murdered by the Nazis.
