Poland plans to send 600 additional troops to Afghanistan as part of a NATO-led mission, although the decision is yet to be finalized by the president, a defense ministry official told Reuters.
The move follows US President Obama's request for more Polish troops on Tuesday.
“The government is inclined to send 600 more troops, but there is a whole procedure to follow and it needs the president's approval,” said Barbara Bartkowska, an aide to Defense Minister Bogdan Klich.
Poland currently has 2,000 troops deployed in Afghanistan, and it is expected that President Kaczyński will approve any request to increase that figure.
However recent surveys have shown that the majority of Poles want Polish troops pulled out of Afghanistan. (JJ)
