Portrait of the 21st Century
Through November 29
Portrait of the 21st Century, a video installation currently showing at the Zachêta National Gallery in Warsaw, was created by two of the world’s preeminent visual artists – the UK’s Douglas Gordon and France’s Philippe Parreno.
he 60-minute reel portrays one of the most brilliant footballers of his age – Zinedine Zidane – from an array of angles provided by 17 different cameras. In spite of the diversity of perspectives, Zidane remains the central focus of the piece, from a closeup of his wrist to a wide-angle view of a brilliant shot.
The aim of Gordon and Parreno’s work is to examine the character and role of modern-day idols. Their visualization will be supplemented by other artists’ works which make ironic reference to the idea of celebrity as a blueprint for socially alienated groups to follow in order to achieve success.
