The Lisbon Treaty baton passes to Poland

Despite President Lech Kaczyński's earlier declarations that he will sign the Lisbon Treaty as soon as it is accepted in Ireland, his decision will not be made that quickly.

"The President wants to make sure that the agreement made with the Prime Minister concerning the bill on competencies will be maintained," one of the people close to the president told Rzeczpospolita.

This means that Mr Kaczyński first wants to divide the responsibilities relating to foreign policies between the PM and the president and then sign the Treaty. According to exit polls from Ireland, 67.1 percent of the public supported the Treaty.

“The sooner the President signs the Lisbon Treaty, the better it will be for Poland," said PM Donald Tusk.
