Captain Daniel Ambroziński, a Polish soldier who was killed in action in Afghanistan last week, has been laid to rest at a cemetery in Jarocin. The funeral was attended by Army officials as well as Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
“All Poles bow their head low,” PM Tusk said at the ceremony. “All of the nation today bids you farewell.”
“In the name Poland, we thank you,” President Lech Kaczyński wrote in a letter.
Daily Polska had earlier published an interview with Natalia Ambrozińska, the soldier's widow. She stated that the conditions in the army are demeaning, with soldiers not even receiving basic foodstuffs while on duty.
Ms Ambrozińska stated that her late husband had to spend money to purchase basic military equipment. “My husband bought ammunition clips, gun sights, anti fragmentation goggles and even a bulletproof vest out of his own pocket,” she told the daily.
