The body of Captain Daniel Ambroziński, a 32-year-old Polish soldier who had been missing since an attack in Afghanistan yesterday, has been found and returned to a Polish base.
Captain Ambroziński died during a six-hour shootout between Taliban militants and a contingent made up of Polish and Afghani soldiers.
The international contingent was fired at with machine guns and bazookas and was aided by US helicopters and planes, which forced the Taliban to withdraw from the attack. Four other Polish soldiers were wounded but none of their lives are endangered.
According to Rzeczpospolita sources, the soldiers were patrolling the area on a mission entitled 'Over the Top.' The attack, the daily says, was very well planned.
Captain Ambroziński's body was found at 4:30 am local time (2:00 am Polish time), after soldiers returned to the scene of the battle.
“It is time to determine how he died and what mistakes were committed during the operation,” General Roman Polko, former commander of the GROM special unit, told TVN24 on Tuesday. “It is surprising. The commander should be especially protected. There is a strong likelihood that there was a leak,” General Polka had said on Monday.
