The Civic Platform (PO) and the Peasants Party (PSL) stand a chance of winning as much as 31 of the 50 Polish seats in the European Parliament (EP). If this turns out to be the case, then these parties together will be stronger than the Italians and thus odds of appointing Jerzy Buzek as the head of the EP are high.
Both parties are a part of the Christian-Democrat bloc in the EP and thus such a number of seats would secure them the second most important position after Germany. "A result equal with the Italians strengthens the chances of Jerzy Buzek.
It will be easier to establish a coalition," said MEP Jacek Saryusz-Wolski. Other politician from the Civic Platform went on to say that such a good result in the election would not be favorable for his party, as in this way it supporters will be lulled into a false sense of security at the weakness of Law and Justice (PiS).
