One week prior to the elections to the European Parliament, the Civic Platform (PO) can no longer be certain of victory in several regions. According to a GfK Polonia poll for Rzeczpospolita, Law and Justice (PiS) is now close behind PO in a handful of its traditional strongholds.
In Podkarpacie, the supremacy of the PO over PiS dropped to only 1% and a similar margin is the case in the Kraków region.
"The strategy aimed at regaining PiS' lairs is saving the day," said dr Jarosław Klis, a sociologist at Jagiellonian University. However, he pointed out that the PO still stands a chance of achieving a great result in the EP elections on June 7 as after two years of ruling the country, loss of public support is not evident.
According to the poll, other parties exceeding the threshold will be SLD-UP and the Polish Peasants Party (PSL). Analysts believe that turnout will be low, with perhaps only 60% bothering to vote.
