Help wanted in Afghanistan

Last week, Aleksander Szczygło, the chief of the National Security Bureau, asked Defense Minister Bogdan Klich to increase the number of Polish troops in Afghanistan. According to media sources, Poland will increase its contingent in Afghanistan by 400 soldiers.

“We have asked the president to approve the plan to send additional troops to Afghanistan,” Klich told a news conference, adding that they would probably arrive in May.

Polish contingent in Afghanistan’s Ghazni province currently consists of 1,600 soldiers. A few weeks ago the Ministry of National Defense had planned to send another 2,200 soldiers, but budget cuts resulted in this plan being abandoned.
The reason for the ministry’s about face on the topic is the situation faced by Polish soldiers on the ground in Ghazni, which is growing more dangerous.

“Americans will soon lead an operation against the Taliban in five provinces surrounding Ghazni and we are afraid that this will push them to our province,” Klich told Rzeczpospolita.
