Following reports on Wednesday that Russia had halted plans to deploy Iskander missiles in the Kaliningrad region to north of Poland, President Lech Kaczyński said there is a lot of contradicting information surrounding the missile placement.
“When it comes to the missile shield, we have conflicting reports,” Interfax reported Lech Kaczyński as saying. “Those are rumors at this point, so allow me not to comment on such an important matter based on uncertain information,” the Polish president added.
Russian and US authorities have not been able to confirm Wednesday’s Interfax reports that unnamed Russian Foreign Ministry sources said the Kremlin was reconsidering the missile deployment. This was because, the report read, Russian authorities had sensed a hesitation from the new Obama administration to push ahead with the deployment of the third phase of defense system in Poland and the Czech Republic.
The US signed an agreement with Poland last year to place elements of a missile shield on Polish soil.
