Dziennik has reported that the Defense Ministry currently has debts totalling zł.3 billion, and this estimate may not be too far from the truth as according to Deputy Defense Minister, Zenon Kosiniak-Kamysz, just the division which deals with purchases for the army, which has an annual budget of zł.5 billion, is short zł.1.8 billion.

"We have debts in relation to the Polish arms industry, including Bumar as well as foreign suppliers. Until the situation is resolved it is difficult to plan any purchases for this year," said Kosiniak-Kamysz.

The situation is so serious that President Lech Kaczyński has called in Defense Minister Bogdan Klich for a meeting. "We are waiting for a detailed explanation from the Defense Ministry," said the head of the National Security Bureau (BBN), Aleksander Szczygło. "Klich gave assurances yesterday that the late payments will be covered until February 10."
