On Monday, Robert Pazik, who was convicted of being part of the gang that kidnapped and murdered Krzysztof Olewnik, was proclaimed dead in his cell in Płock. The official cause of death was suicide, although various media and political voices have been raised that Pazik might have been murdered.
Pazik's is the third in a series of alleged suicides committed by people related to the case. Two other convicted killers killed themselves last year.
According daily newspaper Dziennik, at around 4:40 am on Monday, a security guard noticed that Pazik was out of the view of the CCTV camera in his cell. The guard sounded the alarm, after which prison officials found Pazik hanging from the ceiling in a corner of his cell.
Law enforcement authorities have long been accused of neglecting their duties in both conducting the investigation and securing the prisoners involved in the case. Danuta Olewnik-Cieplińska, Krzysztof's sister, was reported by Dziennik as saying that “Pazik died because he knew too much.”
Law and Justice (PiS) is pressuring the government to create a Sejm commission to investigate the murder of Krzysztof Olewnik, the son of a meat-industry businessman, who was kidnapped for ransom in 2001. After €300,000 was handed over to the gang, Olewnik was not freed.
An investigation into the matter concluded that Olewnik was tortured and murdered a month after kidnappers received the money.
