“Orfeo ed Euridice”
Musical Director: James Levine
Director: Mark Morris
Cast: Stephani Blythe, Danielle de Niese
Great performances from New York’s Metropolitan Opera will come to Warsaw’s Kino Muranów in high-definition throughout the winter season. This month, Warsaw’s landmark Muranów cinema will broadcast “Orfeo ed Euridice” (“Orpheus and Eurydice”). The stage performance of this tale from Greek mythology first appeared in 1885 in Boston and its most recent incarnation, directed by James Levine and starring countertenor David Daniels and soprano Maija Kovalevska, graced the stage in 2007.
Touched by Orpheus’ lament for his dead wife Eurydice, Amore, the incarnation of love, brings word that almighty Jove will allow Orpheus to descend to the underworld and bring Eurydice back to Earth. There is one condition, however: Orpheus can lead Eurydice back to the surface world but he must not look at her. Orpheus abides by the terms and travels on without ever glancing back. Yet this causes Eurydice to doubt Orpheus’s love and debilitated both emotionally and physically, she faints. When Orpheus turns to aid his true love, she disappears, this time forever. Orpheus, on the verge of suicide, is saved by Amore.
“The Damnation of Faust,” “Lucia di Lammermoor,” “Madame Butterfly” and “Cinderella” will be among other performances to grace the Muranów screen over the next few months.
Tickets cost zł.50.
