Public opinion wants Tusk to get tough with the Americans
According to the latest poll of daily Rzeczpospolita, the public expect PM Donald Tusk to engage in tough negotiations with US President George W. Bush over the issue of anti-missile shield to be located in Poland.
According to the results of the research, the public believe that Poland has a too lenient approach to the USA. On Sunday, Donald Tusk landed in the United States on his first visit to Washington during which he will meet President Bush and Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice. The Polish government will try to convince the Americans that over recent years Poland was putting more that its fair share in Polish-American relations and now it is payback time. According to experts, the most important issues that should be discussed by the PM in the US include modernization of the army, abolishing visas, the Afghan mission and NATO expansion. Tusk announced he would not discuss the issue of visas, while 31% of the public believe that this issue and the anti-missile shield should be linked together. "In such situations one has to focus on issues with practical significance. And now these are visas and not arming for a Russian invasion," said Anders Aslund, at the Peterson Institute in Washington. (Rzeczpospolita, March 8-9, pp. A1, A10) M.M.
