According to the latest report issued by the Police, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CB¦) at the end of 2004 was investigating 2,686 people operating in 262 organized crime groups. According to the Bureau, 227 of these groups were Polish while 32 were international gangs.

The remaining three were criminal ethnic groups. "The CB¦ collects and publishes such data each year," said Krzysztof Hajda from the Bureau's press office. He went on to say that the "Polish FBI", as it is often referred to, has managed to liquidate 179 criminal gangs last year, that is over 1,700 gangsters including 200 foreigners. The report reveals that the groups are run by 286 godfathers, of which the Bureau knows of by name. It is known that 94 of the organized groups were dealing chiefly with economic crimes, 67 drugs and 66 with run of the mill crimes. (Rzeczpospolita, p. A5)
