The flipside of the coin

Poland could be joining the eurozone much sooner than first thought - at least.

A redesign of the euro will see Poland and the other new member states represented on the map on each coin. The new image will show the newly enlarged EU, as opposed to the 15 members it currently depicts.

This follows an agreement by EU finance ministers that in future the euro should show either a larger Europe or another common symbol representative of the enlarged Union. EU Finance Commissioner Pedro Solbes will make design recommendation next month.

Officials have yet to clarify a date for the introduction of the new currency, which could leave collectors scrabbling for denominations with a low circulation. The deaths of Pope John Paul II and Prince Rainier of Monaco led to a surge in demand for coins from the Vatican and Monaco, with a complete set of eight coins bearing the late Pope's image changing hands for up to EUR 500 on online auction sites.
