Statistics show EU membership was the right move for Poland
After eight months of Poland's membership in the EU, it turns out that j oining the bloc was a good investment.
For every one euro paid into the EU budget, Poland has received two euro from Brussels. Until recently, the state budget received EUR2.5 billion - EUR1.3 billion more than it paid to the EU as obligatory contributions. In 2005, when structural funds will begin to be paid out in full, Poland will receive a further EUR3.3 billion. The integration was also very profitable for this country's companies, as 90% of them posted higher profits thanks to EU enlargement. Firms have s tarted to create new jobs, invest or are currently considering investments. Poland is now the member country with the fastest growing exports. They have risen by 24% since Poland joined the EU. For the first time, farmers' incomes grew. The richest of them increased their profits by 70%, while those poorer by one third. This was due to rising food prices as well as high demand for Polish food on the EU market. Contrary to what people feared most, there were no mass migrations and foreigners did not buy much real estate in this country. The only drawback to EU membership was an increase in food prices and a stronger złoty. (Rzeczpospolita, pp. A1, A2, B1, B3) D.W.
