CEE united in fighting for EU funds, but for how long?
Poland is ready to break off negotiations concerning the EU budget for 2007-2013 if it turns out that new members will be treated worse than the old members.
Expenditure drafts will be agreed upon next week and they might have decisive influence on the final division of funds, which will be made in mid-2005. For the first time, Poland received support on the issue from the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia, whose Prime Ministers arrived in Warsaw yesterday. "This time it will be different, as the rules concerning the division of the EU's budget will equally involve all of these countries," explained Jarosław Pietras, European Affairs Minister. One of the priorities is to gain acceptance for the structural funds amounting to EUR 336 billion over 2007-2013, half of which will be designated for the new members. The PMs of the four countries also agree on keeping the same level of support for the agriculture sector. However, the problem is that there is also a strong chance that during the final negotiations Poland might be left alone, as happened in the past. (Rzeczpospolita, pp. A1, B1) M.M.
