The U.S. armed forces are considering setting up a base in this country that would see the creation of underground silos to store ten anti-missile missiles. Forming a key element in the U.S. missile defense shield, the installation’s primary role would be to destroy missiles launched from the Middle East. The Americans have already visited a number of possible locations. "Should the Polish and American authorities reach an agreement, and with the Congress' consent, construction could begin as soon as 2006, lasting about two or three years. The expenses - about $5 million - would be covered by the American side," said Wade Boese, an expert form Arms Control Today magazine. He also added that "the missiles have not been tested yet, which is why Congress does not want to finance building new bases now. Besides, we are awaiting presidential elections. Should Kerry win, the idea of a shield will not die out, but it will be limited drastically." Bogusław Majewski, a spokesperson for the Foreign Affairs Ministry said, "The talks have continued since the end of last year, but the Americans have not presented any detailed offer yet."
