The government is now engaged in the first diplomatic quarrel with the Brussels since joining the EU on May 1.

On Wednesday, the European Commission is to present the outline of the EU's Eastern Europe policy, which assumes no contacts with Belarus and no promises of admitting Ukraine to the EU, even in the long run. However, the Foreign Ministry (MSZ) has no plans of submitting to this policy. "We are going to continue with our hitherto policy," said MSZ spokesman Bogusław Majewski. "We will not submit to the pressure of our partners, which very often results from the lack of understanding of the matter. We are the country in the EU which should show the way in the relations with Belarus," he added. (Rzeczpospolita, pp. A1, A7) A.F.
